Asan Barrage, Dehradun

Asan Barrage is a wet land that is perched at the confluence of Easter Yamuna Canal and Asan River that is about 11kms, near Dehradun. It is located in the Uttarakhand-Himanchal Pradesh border in the Doon valley. The uniqueness about this lake is it lures large number of waders and divers from corners of the world. The place is also renowned for its globally threatened species of birds that is listed in IUCN Red Data book.

The barrage is 287.5m long and the river bed is raised to an elevated height of 389.4mts above sea level, with maximum and minimum water level at 403.3mts and 402.4mts. The Asan reservoir is visited by tourists round the year and its main source of water is discharge channel of Yamuna River that flows through Dhalipur power house and via Asan River.

For those who are bird lovers, Asan is a perfect place to explore. Ornithologists may find numerous bird species that travel to Asan barrage and makes this place their new habitat. If you wish to see the red crested pochard or mallard the swimming gently just few hundred yards in wilderness is certainly a mesmerizing experience.

Birds you can see in Asan Barrage
This place as discussed above is hotspot for numerous bird species that are rare to find anywhere else. This barrage serves is a stop by destination for Trans-Himalayan migratory birds. These birds stop by here en route Southern India in the month of October-November and again on their way back in late February and March. At the close of October, Asan observes the migration of birds from the Artic region. The first to arrive birds are shoveller that are followed by ruddy shelduck, coot, mallard, egrets, wagtails, cormorant and pond heron to list some more. Furthermore, few prey birds’ life pallas fishing eagle, greater spotted eagle, steppe eagle and marsh harrier add to the diversity of this place.

Best Time to Visit Asan Barrage
Many people visit Asan Barrage during winters but for bird lovers, time period between May to September end is simply perfect to have a wonderful sight of variety of bird species found here. This is the best time to have sights to local migrants like painted stork, open billed stork, night heron. Here, flock of 25-40 painted storks can be seen in the months every year.

Location of Asan Barrage
At the meeting point of River Yamuna and Asan near Dhalipur Village is situated a wonderful place called Asan Barrage. The place has a small reservoir that is man-made wetland of 4sqkm area and is located 40km west of Dehradun valley on Dehradun-Paonta road.

Travel Guide to Asan Barrage
Air- One can reach Asan Barrage via air. The nearest airport to this place is Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun city and is 23kms away from the city center.

Road- Via Road, Asan Barrage connects to Dehradun only at a distance of 38kms by a highway, en route Paonta Sahib. One can easily reach here from Dehradun which is robustly connected via rail, road and air.
