Birth of a child is the most propitious thing here in Uttarakhand. When woman gives birth to a child she keeps off from all household chores and suppose to rest. During this period the woman is considered as impure and so, a puja is performed after few days in which mantras are chanted and new mother is purified again. After purification ceremony, another important thing that follows is “Naamkaran” or “Christening” ritual that is celebrated on the 11th day of the birth.
If a son child is born, then “Chura Karam” is ritual performed in the 3rd, 5th or 7th year of the child. In this
ceremony, the child’s head is shaved off and the head of the family makes him write few letters on a “Takhti”
and the child can go to school and take up education hereafter. This ceremony is followed by “Puja” and grand
feast where family member and relatives form important part.
All the ceremonies take place in the presence of Brahmin who ought to perform all the Puja and enchant
mantras. Everything is done as per Hindu scriptures and rituals.
