Dwarahat

Dwarhat is located in the Almora district of Uttarkhand and is around 37kms away from Ranikhet. It is a renowned town that is home to 55 primeval temples. This serene place is in the middle of Ranikhet and Garisan at the crossroads of Ranikhet and Kausani road and Almora and Badrnath road.

History
The name Dwarhat literally means Heaven. Ideally “Dwara” means “Way” and ‘Hat” means “Heaven”. Dwarhat is a place that offers tranquil and amazing views to not only ancient temples but also to the wide and sprawling nature that besieges it. Dwarhat is good place for those who wish to associate with almighty and derive divine pleasure. The Dwarhat was constructed mainly by the Katyuri kings and the architecture of Dwarhat resembles to Gurjari School of Art.

20kms away from Dwarhat is a Holy Shrine of Maa Dunagiri that belongs to the mountains that were brought by the Payandey who was the God of Wind. On the nights of Navratri, there are pujas organized in the honor of Nine Goddesses and special offerings are made. The nine avatars of Goddesses are- Maa Shaiputri, Maa Bhrahmacharini, Maa Chandrghanta, Maa Kushmaanda, Maa Skandmata, Maa Katyayini, Maa Kaalratri, Maa Chaamunda and Maa Siddhhidhatri. In order to reach the shring of Durga Maa or Paban Maharaj Ashram one has to climb around 500 steps atop hill.

Dwarhat and Around
Dwarhat is one of the popular centers of education in Kumaon as there is an engineering and polytechnic institute at Dwarhat apart from various elementary level schools. Dwarhat is an amazing place to stay by with numerous temples and wonderful sightseeing destinations in place. Besides there are various lodging and fooding facilities as in Ashrams at Almora, Ranikhet and Kausani that provide pleasant and comfortable stays. There is couple of plays and fairs also organized at Dwarhat as Doonagiri Mela that is 52kms from Ranikhet, Syalde Bikhauti Mela that is celebrated on Vishuwat Sanskranti Day.

Music and dance performances are organized on this festival. In the other places of Kumaon, Dwarhat celebrates significant festivals like Makar Sankranti, Herala, Bhaitauli, Basant Panchami, Bat Savitri, Ganga Dusshera, Olgia and Khatarua.
