Kaleshwar Mahadev temple is very old temple in Lansdowne that forms the cynosure and eminent center of devotion for pilgrims. The holy shrine is also famous for brave Garhwal regiment who is responsible for the maintenance of the dharamshal around the temple. The shrine is named after holy Sage Kalun who did meditation here.
Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple- Oldest Shrine in Lansdowne
One of the famous and eminent places for devotees of Lord Shiva is Lansdowne, Kaleshwar temple that enthralls pilgrims from far and wide. It is the place where sages have meditated for over years. Still samadhis of many sages is present here. The temple was built in the year 1901. A dharamshala was also built near the temple that is presently maintained by Garhwal Regiment.
One of the uniqueness of Kaleshwar temple is the shivling of Lord Shiva that is mounted here. It is said that it is self-formed idol and on the occasion of Maha shivratri huge crowd appears to offer their prayers to the Lord.
As per myths and beliefs it is said that on the day of Maha Shivratri, some herders lost their cows. After lot of search when cows were found they were milking the Shivlinga of the Lord in the cave on their own.
People suppose that that approximately 5000 years ago, Sage Kalun did meditation here before the shivlinga. Previous name of Lansdowne is Kaludanda that was named after Sage Kalun.
